Bonding tape replaces traditional fastener fastening tape just around the corner

It is understood that 3M has introduced a fastening tape that claims to replace fasteners such as screws and rivets - "VHB tape". What characteristics and potential does this tape have? Special commissioner from ENGINEERING.com interviewed Peter Rebstock, 3M's joint project manager at the show. Peter Rebstock made the following statement, saying that it is just around the corner.
        1. VHB tapes are all made of acrylic material with closed-cell foam. They are especially good at joining heterogeneous materials. The operation strength is fast, the jointing work is clean and the post-completed procedure is eliminated. If you want to forge or rive a material, you will need to pre-process, that is, drill or pre-treat the surface of the material. The post-program is a mark for forging cleaning, grinding, trimming rivets or painting. The VHB tape eliminates all of the above procedures by simply bonding the tape to the material, removing the liner and joining the second material, and finally applying a pressure of about 15 psi along the bond line for immediate operational strength.
        2. Another feature of VHB tape is its ability to be used in both front and back powder coating operations. In the front powder coating operation, you can bake the VHB tape after sticking it. 3M VHB tape (No. 4611) can withstand temperatures up to 232 degrees Celsius. In the post-powder coating operation, what is to be seen is the surface material to be joined. The metal material to be joined is not the metal but the plastic material. At this point you can use 3M VHB tape (No. 5900), which is good at joining low surface energy plastics such as PC ABS, Delrin or Acetal.
        3. The 3M VHB tape we designed basically absorbs the dynamic load, so it can be stretched or deformed, and it can be changed back to its original shape. Therefore, considering the expansion coefficient between plastic and metal, the expansion coefficient will of course be The thickness of the metal varies depending on the thickness. In the case of heating or cold, it is important to let the bond wire absorb the expansion force instead of transferring the stress metal or plastic. 3M VHB tape will let you do it.
        4. In general mechanical fastening work, you will need to obtain the strength of the local position, so you will drill the hole along the joint line, and then fasten the buckle construction along the fixed length during the fastening process. In the middle, local stress is formed around the hole, making the material weak. If you use 3M VHB tape, the stress generated by the joint can be evenly distributed on the bonding wire, so the ability to absorb dynamic stress is stronger.
        5. 3M VHB tape has an overlap shear of 250 to 300 psi and a strength of up to 4,000 psi if applied to construction materials.
