Hitachi Cable Co., Ltd. has recently developed a modified polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) preparation technology. The wear resistance of new products is 1000 to 10000 times that of ordinary PTFE, and the creep resistance is 2-3 times that of ordinary PTFE, and it also has High transparency and flexibility. This method was successfully developed by Hitachi Cable Co., Ltd. based on the Japan Atomic Energy Research and Development Crosslinking Technology, and they were the first companies to sell commercialized cross-linked PTFE.
This technique cross-links PTFE by electron beam radiation at an inert gas atmosphere of 327 degrees Celsius (close to the melting point of PTFE). The radiation dose is greater than 50 kilorays, and the specific dose is determined by the desired properties of the product. The researchers found that the key step of this method is that cross-linking must be performed near the melting point of PTFE. At other temperatures, radiation will decompose the material.
Hitachi Cable Co., Ltd. provides seven grades of modified PTFE, including powders, plate models, blocks, pellets, and membranes, which can be used in various fields such as lip seals for cylinders and valve seats for ball valves. The price of various products of modified PTFE is different, and the price of block products is estimated to be 3 to 5 times that of ordinary PTFE. However, Hitachi Cable Corporation pointed out that the excellent properties of the materials can compensate for their higher prices. For example, the lip seals can resist high-speed performance, can increase the life of the valve plate by a factor of 2, and the light transmittance at a wavelength of 600 nm can reach 21 %, while ordinary PTFE is only 2%.
